Your Scottsdale, AZ Orthodontists

At Affiliated Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics (APDO), our number one priority is ensuring our patients have the healthiest, most beautiful smiles possible, and we believe that patient education is a big part of that. While in orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign what happens outside the office – can have a huge impact on your smile and the treatment result.

Dangerous Foods To Eat With Braces

Some of the foods on this list are common sense for braces – avoid hard foods, like raw vegetables or hard candies, as these can break brackets and wires, and avoid gummy, sticky foods, as these can get caught between brackets and cause damage to your braces. Equally important to avoid, though, are sugary foods. These interact with naturally occurring bacteria in your mouth to form acids that eat away at tooth enamel, leading to tooth decay and cavities. Also avoid nail biting, pencil or pen chewing, and chewing on any foreign objects – all of these can damage your braces.

Examples of Sticky Foods to Avoid:

  • Gum (both sugar-free and regular)
  • Licorice
  • Sugar Daddies and Sugar Babies
  • Toffee
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Caramels
  • Starburst

Examples of Hard Foods to Avoid:

  • Ice Cubes
  • Nuts of any kind
  • Hard taco shells
  • Corn on the cob (if cut off the cob, cooked corn is fine)
  • Apples and carrots (ok if cut into tiny pieces)
  • Bagels
  • Chips of any kind
  • Pizza crust

Examples of Sugary Foods to Avoid:

  • Cake
  • Ice Cream
  • Cookies
  • Pie
  • Candy

Not More than Once a Day (preferably not at all!):

  • Soda
  • Sweet tea
  • Gatorade
  • Kool-Aid
  • Any sugary drinks

Be sure to regularly examine your braces for any signs of bent, loose, or broken wires and brackets. If you find something loose or broken, please call our office immediately so we can make an appointment to get it fixed.
