Retention

Retainers Help Maintain Your New Smile

At Affiliated Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, your treatment doesn’t end when the braces or Invisalign aligners come off. Wearing your retainer is crucial in keeping your teeth in their newly-located position. This retention phase of your treatment can last 24 months or longer. When you return to our Scottsdale/Shea or Grayhawk office, we will make sure you are fitted with a comfortable retainer.

Our orthodontic experts will design a maxillary retainer for your upper teeth, which is removable. You may also have a fixed retainer which is affixed to the back of your teeth. Wearing these retainers regularly will determine your final orthodontic results.

Why wear your retainer?

It takes time for your teeth to completely “set” in their new positions. The bone and tissue in your jaw have to relocate. After your braces are removed, teeth can begin to shift back to their original location, especially during the first month. Wearing your retainer overnight can maintain the position of your teeth. Keeping your teeth aligned has a variety of continued benefits including easier to clean teeth, and improved breathing.

Caring For Your Retainer

Your retainer is fragile and should be handled with care. We provide a protective box to place your retainer in when not in use. To clean your retainers, brush them with toothpaste (sometimes with denture cleaner) using warm water. Your retainer should also be removed when participating in sports that require a mouthguard or while swimming. After the first year, we will re-evaluate your retainer treatment and possibly lessen the number of hours each day that you need to wear your retainer.

Contact us anytime to answer any questions you have about retainers or any other dental or orthodontic question. We are ready to assist all patients in the Scottsdale, Shea or Grayhawk areas. Remember, your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far!
