Early Treatment

Orthodontics-TeenA beautiful smile can make a big difference when it comes to the confidence and self-worth of a child, and early orthodontic treatment can be one of the best things parents can do to ensure that their child has a smile to be proud of. At Affiliated Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, our doctors work with patients of all ages, but in order to achieve the best results, we recommend getting an evaluation at an early age.

The Optimal Age to Start Treatment

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, the ideal time to evaluate for pediatric orthodontic treatment is age seven. By this time, your child’s first adult molars have generally erupted, and the back bite is established. Once those teeth are in place, your orthodontist is better able to see how the relationship of the teeth may impact a child's bite or cause crowding in the future.

The Benefits of Early Treatment

When it comes to orthodontic care, catching a problem before it worsens can significantly improve the results of treatment. An early evaluation can give orthodontists the opportunity to detect any issues, and begin treatment as soon as possible. By guiding the growth and development of the teeth and mouth, the need for more intensive care, later on, may be avoided. Other advantages of interceptive treatment at a young age include:

  • Reduction of crowding by providing more room in the mouth
  • Increase in facial symmetry
  • Reduction of risk to front tooth trauma
  • Lessened need for tooth removal
  • Decreased treatment time in braces

By catching any problems early on, you can save time and money down the road.
