Adjusting To Life With Invisalign

Recent survey results have demonstrated the fact that straight teeth can increase one’s self-esteem, confidence and happiness. If you’re one of the thousands in the Phoenix area who have selected the Invisalign treatment process to straighten your teeth, you are well on your way to a beautiful new smile.

Invisalign is a preferred orthodontic treatment method for Scottsdale orthodontists like Affiliated Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics (APDO) for those who want to perfect their smile with the least amount of notice. The clear plastic aligners are hardly noticeable and allow  the teeth to move without the hassles of bracket and wires.

Despite the many advantages of your APDO Invisalign treatment, it may take some time to adjust to the aligners in your mouth. Here are some tips to help you through your invisalign treatment to ensure a smooth and convenient experience.

Invest In A Travel Kit

Invisalign aligners only work if you wear them.  Our Invisalign patients must commit to wearing their aligners 22 hours a day. However, plan to take the aligners anytime you eat or drink something throughout the day. Before you put them back in, be sure to brush your teeth to ensure the aligners are being placed over clean teeth.  Never insert your trays after eating if you haven't brushed your teeth. Putting your trays in without cleaning your teeth puts you at risk for developing cavities and staining your aligners. A small travel toothbrush can be the mainstay of your dental travel kit. Add a travel-sized toothpaste, dental floss, an aligner case, and mini mouthwash, now you’re set to be on the go as you travel about Phoenix or beyond. Just place this travel kit in your purse or pocket every morning ensures you have it with you whenever you need it.

Use A Nail File

Although the chances of your Invisalign aligners cutting into your mouth and gums is far less common than with traditional braces, it can sometimes happen. Your Invisalign aligner trays can come out of the molds a little sharp and rub the inside of your cheeks. To solve this problem, you can round off the more pointed ends using a new emery board.

Clean & Refresh Aligners Often

Having anything in your mouth for 22 hours every day can leave a weird taste in your mouth and your breath. When you take your aligners out to eat, we recommend that your brush your aligners with a toothbrush and toothpaste and rinse them off with cold water.  To thoroughly clean your Invisalign aligners, consider soaking them in a glass of water with a denture or retainer cleaning tablet.

Use Your Phone Timer

It’s so easy to forget to put your aligners back in after you eat or drink. Don’t let the hours slip away. Maintain your 22 hours of aligner wear each day by setting the timer on your phone or watch to remind you a half hour after every time you take them out. This may seem like too much, but the more hours you have your aligners in, the faster your treatment time will be and the closer you will be to a new, healthy, beautiful smile!

Invest In A Removal tool

Because you will need to remove and replace your Invisalign aligners several times every day, you may want to invest in an Aligner Removal Tool. This will not only keep your hands out of your mouth, it will protect your manicured nails from damage. DentalKit.com offers one for less than $4. And, on Amazon.com, you can purchase the Outie tool for about $20. These plastic tools hook onto your plastic aligners for fast, easy removal.

All of these tips should help you live a happy life during your Invisalign treatment with APDO.
