This is the image for the news article titled Best Foods for Your TeethIt probably goes without saying that the food you eat has an effect on your teeth. Growing up, you were most likely warned about the danger of cavities if you ate too many sugary treats or the negative effects that acidity in soft drinks has on tooth enamel — but did you know certain foods can also have a positive impact on your oral health? Affiliated Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics wants the best for you and your smile, which means making sure you’re eating enough of the foods that help keep your teeth in top-notch health!

Staying hydrated is not only super important for your overall health, but also has a big impact on your oral health. Your saliva is 99% water and is also one of your mouth’s biggest natural defenses against acids and enzymes that attack tooth enamel. When your body becomes dehydrated, your saliva thickens and becomes less effective, and that can make you more susceptible to tooth decay. Drinking water can also help ward off bad breath since it helps wash away food particles and bacteria left in your mouth after eating.

Most nuts are naturally packed full of many great health benefits such as being high in fiber and vitamins. In particular, walnuts are an excellent source of many important vitamins that help keep your teeth strong, while cashews, almonds, and brazil nuts help fight bacteria. Peanuts are also a good source of vitamin D and calcium! Walnuts are also a great source of natural fluoride.

While it definitely doesn’t do your breath any favors, garlic contains something called allicin. Allicin is an organosulfur compound that can act as an antimicrobial for your mouth, meaning it helps fight against tooth decay and can also help prevent gum disease!

Besides being packed full of many great vitamins that are beneficial to teeth, apples are also great saliva producers. Thanks to their fibrous texture, apples help reduce plaque buildup on your teeth, as well as gently massaging and stimulating your gums.

Dairy Products

Dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, and milk are great for your oral health in a variety of ways. These foods are all great sources of calcium and stimulate saliva production. Milk also contains a lot of beneficial phosphates that help reduce the effects of acids and enzymes, while yogurt contains some great restorative minerals. Cheese can reduce the acidity in a person’s mouth.  Just make sure you’re choosing dairy products without a lot of added sugars!

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens like spinach and kale aren’t just superfoods for your body, they’re super great for your teeth and gums, too! These greens are rich in folic acid, which is a type of B vitamin that may help fight gum disease. Leafy greens also contain calcium, which we all know helps keep your teeth strong.

Sugarless Gum

It’s pretty commonplace to pop in a piece of gum after a meal to help freshen breath and hopefully clear out any remaining food particles. However, the benefits don’t stop there — chewing gum sweetened with xylitol instead of sugar can actually help protect your teeth. Xylitol is a plant-derived sugar extract that can actually fight against some bacterias that lead to tooth decay.

While it’s not the most exciting vegetable, celery has some excellent oral health benefits that make it well worth the trouble of chomping through its stringy texture. Thanks to how fibrous it is, celery is great at scrubbing away bacteria and food particles from the teeth and gum line. It’s also packed full of vitamins beneficial to your gums, and thanks to its high water content it is another great saliva booster.
