Our Doctors are Board Certified – But What Does That Mean?

At Affiliated Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics we take pride in helping our patients achieve healthy, beautiful smiles that last them a lifetime. We are committed to high-quality treatment, and we work hard to create customized treatment plans that are highly effective for each patient. We also take pride in the fact that all of our orthodontists are board certified – but we realize that for many of our patients, that term is a mystery. Rest assured, though: it's an important qualification, and it gives you the peace of mind of knowing that your child is in good, capable hands.

What Is a Board Certified Orthodontist?

A board certified orthodontist is an orthodontist who has voluntarily gone through hundreds of additional hours of preparation to demonstrate their judgment, skills and knowledge required for providing the highest level of patient care.   They have achieved board certification through the American Board of Orthodontics, the only orthodontic specialty board recognized by the American Dental Association and in affiliation with the American Association of Orthodontists.

An orthodontist is a dentist who has not only completed a graduate program in dentistry to receive their DDS or DMD (Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine), but has also gone through a competitive residency at an orthodontic program for an additional 2-3 years to be trained specifically in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.

If an orthodontist is board certified, they've completed not only traditional college and dental school, but an additional 2-year postdoctoral program devoted to the study of orthodontics. This means that in all, a board certified orthodontist has gone through 10 years of schooling to earn their certification! Board certification also means that the orthodontist has been evaluated by the board and earned their "stamp of approval."

But beyond the years of training, certifications, and exams, board certification denotes an orthodontist you can trust. A board certified orthodontist is dedicated to their craft and committed to the health and well-being of their patients, and you can trust that they'll bring their expertise to bear in helping patients achieve a beautiful smile. Board certification isn't just a stamp or a piece of paper: it's a crucial symbol of professional competence and dedication.
